Our Centre

Inspired by the universal vision of Ven. Namgyal Rinpoché, solidly rooted in traditions of living wisdom and engaged compassion, for people of all spiritual traditions

The Wangapeka Study and Retreat Centre is a dedicated place to study the teachings of Wisdom, Compassion and Non-clinging Awareness. It is owned and operated by the Wangapeka Educational Trust, a registered New Zealand charitable trust. It is located in the foothills of the Southern Alps, it overlooks the Wangapeka River, about an hour and a half drive SW of Nelson, in the South Island of New Zealand.

Since 1975, the vision of engaged, pan-sectarian, universal teachings has energised the Wangapeka and its activities, and we acknowledge the contribution and supportof our nine guiding teachers and elders: Tarchin Hearn, Mary Jenkins, Bonni Ross, Matthew Eades, Keith Rowan, Mark Schrader, Shelley Szybowski, Jane Hobday and Graham Sandlant.

They carry a vibrant, living vision of the teaching and dharma traditions of the Wangapeka (Retreat Centre), and though none currently reside at the centre, they all visit and give regular retreats here, and are living reminders of what this great project is all about.

Our Centre was purpose built as a place to study, practice and live the great teachings of liberation in their many forms. It is available for individual and group retreats, ranging from weekends to several months in length.

The Centre is a peaceful and healing environment, a place of natural beauty imbued with decades of spiritual practice. Since 1975 uncountable people have given freely from the heart to build a place that is of benefit to all beings.
